Laois Cross Country Championship Day 2 11.10.2017

Another very successful day of Cross Country running. Thanks to Ballyroan/Abbeyleix and district AC for hosting this year’s intermediate and uneven age championship.  Cross Country Championships is each athlete’s way of showing loyalty to your club by wearing your singlet and help complete teams.  All clubs where well represented at Juvenile and Intermediate levels showing the athletics is still strong in Laois.  While the ground was not as soft as day 1, there were a few hills to contend with but nothing our athletes were not able for.

Sunday’s racing kicked off with a non-championship U8 race for girls and boys and we had two competitors Grace Cuddy and Jack Meade.  Jack running in the top ten to get himself a medal and Grace was just outside the medal category but very happy to compete.  It’s great to have these races for the smaller ones who are mostly at these events anyway to support other family members.

Girls U9: Unfortunately no competitors

Boys U9: We were just one short of a team.  Daniel Downey had a supper run to win this race well done Daniel.  Daniel was followed by Tom McAulay in 12th ,and Cormac O’Connor in 15th.

Girls U11: Cousins Emma Jane Cuddy 16th & Doireann O’Connor 18th each ran a good race today.

Boys U11: We had 5 boys in this race and congratulations to Oliver McCaulay on his podium finish with 2nd place. Oliver was followed by Fionn Cuddy 12th, Daniel Murell 18th, Harrison Marshall 11th, and Jack Fennell 24th.

Girls U13: It was great to see big numbers still as we move up the age category to U13.  25 in total.  Of these 25, we had 5 athletes Grace Meade 10th Caoimhe cuddy 11th, Leah Smullen 13th, Rebecca Marshall 17th Aoife Cuddy 19th and Sarah Murell 25th. All girls ran a great race as a team, and for this manged to get team gold. Well done girls keep it up.

Boys U13: Jack Murell was our single athlete in this race and well-done Jack finishing in 6th place.

Girls U19:  Amy Walsh was our only girl in the u19 race so unfortunately Amy had no team to support her but Amy was not fazed by this what so ever and ran strongly throughout the 4k race and was rewarded with individual bronze medal.

Boy’s u19: Well done to our U/19 lads who came home with a bronze team medal in the Laois Cross Country championships held recently in Abbeyleix. In what was a good course for cross country the three lads; Fionn Marum, David Faulkner and Luke Gibney stuck to their tasks well. All kept battling to the finish and were rewarded for their hard work.

Great running by all our Juniors who put in hard work each week as well as focusing on their exams.

Ladies Intermediate 4K

Before the Boys u19 was the intermediate Women’s race.  In this we had 6 intermediate Ladies, Anna Duggan 7th, Maria Cuddy 8th, Catherine Ryan 9th, Pam Grogan 12th, Norah MGrath 13th and Aoife Conoy 15th.  All the ladies packed well and worked hard to finish in 2nd place.

Men Intermediate 8K

Our intermediate men was the final race of the day and unfortunately the rain poured down.  Patrick Marshall took joint lead in this race for some time and finished in 5th position, first of our Portlaosie Ac men to finish followed by Paul Cuddy 16th, Fionan Cuddy 26th and Sean O Donoghue 27th.  Well done to Fionan Cuddy and John Gaughan for competing their first cross country races and we hope it will be the first of many.

Thanks to all athletes, parents and supporters for your help on the day.  We look forward to doing it all over again on Day 3, Masters, and junior developments races to be held on the 5th November in Emo Court.

Amsterdam Marathon

Well done to James Hamm who ran Amsterdam Marathon.   James ran a 2:46.58 marathon a PB by 2 minutes in very warm conditions.   Unfortunately Cyril was unable to continue after 15k due to a recurring injury and speedy recovery to Cyril. The guys along with other Portlaoise AC athletes yet to do the Dublin City Marathon are raising money for Spinal Injuries so well done a great cause.
