Streets of Portlaoise 5K
Thanks to all the parents, volunteers, race organisers and participants who turned out in great numbers despite the bitter cold weather. Portlaoise Athletic Club would like to thank everyone who supported the 5k race including all our sponsors and marshals. A special word of thanks to all the Gardaí for all their help in ensuring that the Streets of Portlaoise 5k ran smoothly and safely.
The race saw a record number of 700 runners take part on a cold but dry morning. Elite runners came from all over the country including Olympians Mick Clohisey and Kerry O’Flaherty. This year saw the introduction of a new course and team prizes. First to cross the line was Hiko Tonosa in a time of 14:40 from DSD AC, followed closely by Eric Keogh from Donore Harriers. Mick Clohisey was hot on their tails to finish in 3th place, with Sean Heir Rathfarnham in 4th and William Maunsel, Clonmel A.C in 5th.
The women’s field was equally as competitive with Kerry O’Flaherty winning in a fantastic time of 16:10. Shona Heaslip form An Riocht was 2nd, with Claire McCarthy following in 3rd. Linda Byrne from DSD A.C. followed in 4th with our own Mary Mulhare finishing in 5th place.
Over 350 children lined up to take part in the 3 children’s fun run’s with each child receiving a medal and Easter egg.
Well done to the over 80 club members who took part in the streets of Portlaoise 5k. Lots of winners and lots of PBs set on the day from some of our youngest members all the way to senior.
